Why Cigars Are About Connection, Not Just Smoking
For 35 years, I had the privilege of serving in the United States Air Force, ultimately retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant. During those decades of service, I learned many lessons about leadership, sacrifice, and resilience. But perhaps the greatest lesson I learned was the value of connection.
The military has a way of bringing together people from every corner of America—and often the world. Different backgrounds. Different cultures. Different experiences. Yet we all wore the same uniform, shared the same mission, and depended on one another. Those bonds weren't built during formal meetings or ceremonies alone. They were forged during long deployments, late-night conversations, celebrations after a successful mission, and quiet moments when we simply sat together reflecting on life.
For many of us, those conversations happened over a cigar.
To someone outside the cigar community, it's easy to assume that cigars are simply about smoking tobacco. But anyone who has spent time in a cigar lounge or gathered around a fire with fellow enthusiasts knows that's only a small part of the experience.
The cigar is merely the invitation.
The connection is the purpose.
Throughout my Air Force career, I discovered that some of the most honest conversations happened when the day's work was done and a few of us gathered to enjoy a premium cigar. We hung out at the Local American Legion and smoked cigars and ate ribs and shrimp and had a few beverages as well. Rank seemed less important. Titles disappeared. We weren't focused on tomorrow's briefing or the next guardmount inspection. We were simply people sharing stories about our families, our careers, our challenges, and our dreams.
Those conversations built trust.
They strengthened friendships.
They reminded us that behind every uniform was a person with a story worth hearing.
Today, I find that same spirit within the cigar community.
Whether I'm sitting beside a veteran, an entrepreneur, a first responder, a teacher, or someone lighting their very first premium cigar, the conversation almost always follows the same path. We start by talking about the cigar, but before long we're talking about life.
That's the magic of cigar culture.
A premium cigar naturally encourages us to slow down. You can't rush a good cigar. It asks you to be patient, to be present, and to enjoy the moment. In a world where everyone seems to be in a hurry, that's a rare gift.
I've watched complete strangers become lifelong friends because they shared a table in a cigar lounge. I've seen business partnerships begin with a handshake over a cigar. I've witnessed veterans reconnect with a sense of brotherhood they hadn't felt since leaving military service.
That sense of community is something our country needs more of.
As a retired Chief Master Sergeant, leadership was never just about accomplishing the mission. It was about taking care of people. Listening. Mentoring. Building trust. Creating an environment where people felt respected and valued.
Ironically, those same leadership principles exist within the best cigar lounges.
No one cares about your job title when you walk through the door. They care about your story. They ask what you're smoking, where you're from, and what brought you in today. Before long, you're sharing experiences with people you met only minutes earlier.
That's not an accident.
That's community.
It's one of the reasons I created Chief of the Leaf.
This platform isn't simply about reviewing premium cigars or discussing flavor profiles. There are plenty of places to find that information. My mission is to celebrate the people behind the cigars—the veterans, business leaders, first responders, craftsmen, and everyday individuals who understand that a cigar is often the beginning of a meaningful conversation.
Every episode is an opportunity to share stories, preserve traditions, and remind people that genuine human connection still matters.
Because long after the cigar has burned down and the smoke has drifted away, what remains are the conversations.
The laughter.
The wisdom shared.
The friendships formed.
The memories created.
Those are the things that endure.
As I reflect on my military career, I realize that many of the relationships I value most weren't built in conference rooms or during official ceremonies. They were built during the unhurried moments when fellow Airmen sat together, lit a cigar, and talked about life.
Today, that tradition continues.
Different setting.
Different chapter.
Same purpose.
